As their name implies, Holotype's music has a distinctive sound and style all of its own. Fusing together fierce screams and aggressive music with infectious melodies and a focus on solid songwriting, Holotype's music covers the full spectrum of heaviness and melody. With influences ranging from more melodious acts such as 36 Crazyfists and Sevendust to metal masters Slipknot and Shadows Fall, you will find yourself locked in by a sweeping melody one moment and pummeled by an aggressive onslaught the next. Formed in late 2003, Holotype have made a name for themselves in the Florida music scene through ruthless promoting, passing out countless copies of their E.P., and putting on one of the most electrifying live performances around.

Currently Holotype is recording for their first full-length release with Orlando-based producers Justin Thomas and Brett Hestla (Virgos Merlot, Faktion, Dark New Day) at Gridlock Studios in Orlando, Florida.

SD.com: How old were you when you started playing?

Don: I started playing around 11 years old when I got into middle school.. It was mainly snare and percussion. I didnt start playing the set until I was able to afford one at when I was 17.

 

 

SD.com: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?

Don: Definately! I played all throughout middle and high school.  I was captain of my highschool drumline starting my 10th grade year.  I was never in any drum corps. I always wanted to try out for one but I never had the time.

 

 

SD.com: Ever take any lessons?

Don: Yes, if you count middle and high school, but I have never had any private lessons.

 

 

SD.com: Who are your top 5 influences?

Don: Let me give you my top 5 influences that aren't Neil Peart.  Gene Hoglan, Raymond Herrera, Richard Christy, Phil Collins (for more than just his drumming) and Virgil Donatti.

 

 

SD.com: Assuming that influences doesn't mean favorites, who are your current favorites?

Don: The top 3 right now I would say are Brann Dailor, Chris Adler, Jason Bittner.

SD.com: Can you remember a night you think was your best playing ever? If yes, when and where?

Don: Probably this year Florida Music Festival at Club Firestone in downtown Orlando.

 

 

SD.com: Do you have a favorite brand of drums or cymbals?

Don: Sabian has been my favorite for years, probably since I started playing. However lately Ive been breaking Sabians left and right for some reason, I've been trying out Zildjian Cymbals.  As of right now, I would have to say I am liking them much better than my Sabs.

 

 

SD.com: Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Don: Warm up, stretch, tune, dont drink anything but water, and I try to spend at least 30 min by myself to clear my head.

 

 

SD.com: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?

Don: Aside from spending time with my family, I would like to go back to school, maybe for either Roller Coaster design or Computers.
