I started drumming when I was 13 and I’m now 20. I took lessons from a Santa Cruz dude named Rick Walker. Rick is one hell of a drummer and the biggest musical influence I've had. When I started high school, I joined my high school jazz band and orchestra/marching band. I did stage, honor jazz and honor concert bands and went to many festivals. During that time i learned to read drum charts, which has helped me immensely as a drummer and musician. It wasn't until 16 or so I really started delving into death metal music. When I was 17 I started playing with the musicians that became the band I'm currently in called Son of Aurelius.
Spencer Edwards Interview:
SDM: How old were you when you started playing?
Spencer: I was 13 when I got my first drum kit, though like many guys have been drumming on things since I was a little kid.
SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?
Spencer: I played in my high school jazz band, marching band and stage orchestra. The drum kit is my instrument of choice, but quad/quint toms are really cool too.
SDM: Who are your top 5 metal influences?
Spencer: Derek Roddy, Dave Haley, George Kollias, Dave Hamilton, John Longstreth
SDM: Who are some other of your favorites?
Spencer: Dave Weckl, Virgil Donati, Bobby Jarzombek, Jojo Mayer

SDM: Let us know 5 CD's that are in your current rotation
Spencer: I Monarch (Hate Eternal), Annihilation of the Wicked (Nile), Beyond the Lands of Human Existence (Dire Wolf), Live in Montreal (Quo Vadis), Ziltoid The Omniscient (Devein Townsend)
SDM: What do you do to warm up before a show?
Spencer: Yes, I find if I'm not warmed up I tend to tense up and not play as well. I generally have a pad for my feet and kicks and do alternating groupings between them.
SDM: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?
Spencer: Yes, I read percussion music. It has definitely helped me as a drummer. If I have the music , I learn it twice as fast. When I'm jamming out a new tune, the guitarist often write out their notations and time signatures before hand and I will read along as we jam them. It has been a very helpful tool.
SDM: Can you tell us about the gear you use?
Spencer: I have a 7 piece Pearl Reference kit, Axis pedals, and many different brands of cymbals.

Spencer: Derek Roddy, that guy is the master.
SDM: Aside from drumming, what else do you like to do?
Spencer: Hanging out and writing music.
