Keep up with Bill here:
To be honest I don’t remember when exactly I started drumming, but I can’t remember not drumming....so it must have been a damn long time. I asked for a drum kit one Christmas because I couldn’t stop tapping on things, so why not start beating on things...louder things. It must have been a wise choice considering my first ever legitimate recording is going to be produced by Jason Suecof (Trivium, All That Remains) and put out by none other that Roadrunner Records in which Mutiny Within owes the world to.
Bill: I’m not completely sure, but I was very young in elementary school.
SDM: Did you play in a school band or any drum corps?
Bill: I played in elementary school, but we only played the snare drum..or maybe a cymbal or bass drum here and there. 7th and 8th grade I also played in the middle school band but you can only play Sing Sing Sing so many times. I found that playing by myself or with a band was much more enjoyable than the traditional school band.
SDM: Who are your top 5 metal influences?
Bill: Dirk Verbeuren, Tim Yeung, Chris Adler, Mike Smith
SDM: Who are some other of your favorites?
Bill: Mike Portnoy, Terry Bozzio, Dennis Chambers
SDM: Let us know 5 CD's that are in your current rotation
Bill: All That Remains - Overcome, Trivium - Shogun, Killswitch Engage - Alive or Just Breathing, Nightrage - A New Disease is Born, The Black Dahlia Murder - Miasma
SDM: What do you do to warm up before a show?
Bill: A lot of stretching, especially my legs. It’s real important to get the blood flowing and loosen up your legs to a certain degree before playing fast music. Aside from that some basic stick movements backstage or wherever that may be.
SDM: Do you read music? Regardless of answering yes or no, please tell us how it might have effected your playing?
Bill: No I don’t, well not really. Back in elementary school they tried teaching the rudimentary aspects of reading music, like snare drum pretty much. With the way I play or I record , reading music or not reading music hasn’t had an effect on my playing whatsoever, but hell im sure it’s always a good thing to know.
SDM: Can you tell us about the gear you use?
Bill: I play a Pearl kit at the moment, use both Sabian and Zildjian cymbals, and Axis Longboards. Aside from that I also use an Alesis DM5 module for my triggers.
SDM: If you could give one piece of advice to young drummers, it would be...
Bill: PRACTICE..the most cliche piece of advice I know but it’s true. Practice as much as possible and don’t keep yourself confined to one particular style, make your own.
SDM: Who gave the best live performance you've ever seen?
Bill: Drum wise, id have to say All That Remains. Shannon didn’t miss one beat and the songs were lightning fast. Awesome live show.
SDM: If you had to stop drumming, what would you want to do with your life?
Bill: Get a lot of medication due to the extraordinary amount of nervous energy id have pent up, drums help keep me from going completely insane.
