Snare ring. 3 Years, 1 Month ago Karma: 0
I am a fairly new drummer and i am having trouble with my snare. It seems to have alot of ring and sustain and i can't seem to tune it out. Should i loosen my bottom head and keep my batter tight or is it the other way around? Don't get me wrong this is not a buzz like you would get from your lugs, but a ring that lasts after i hit the snare. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Muffle it. I have a Tama Metalworks,
and no matter how I tune the heads, it always has a "ring" to it.
The only way I found to get rid of it is to fold up a small piece
of cloth into a rectangle about 2 1/2 x 1 inch and tape it to the
head somewhere near the rim. I use clear packing tape,
but I'm sure scotch tape or whatever will work. Just experiment.
They also sell "Moongels" for this purpose. They work pretty well,
but I just prefer the old school way.
As far as your bottom head, most metal drummers keep it pretty tight.
Here's a trick I learned: Don't try to put the bottom head perfectly in tune.
Just keep it really tight. If there is slightly different tension in each lug
around the snare side, the head won't have a specific note. That way,
the snare is less likely to rattle when you don't want it to. (They call it
sympathetic buzz, since the snare "sympathizes" with other instruments).
Unless you are recording in the studio, you probably don't need to pay
much attention to getting the top and bottom heads of a snare "in synch" the way
you do with your toms. Just try to get that nice high CRACK sound.
That's my 2 cents.

A guy told me to put 4 strips of duck tape around the edges of the snare to stop the ring. Since you seem to know what you are doing, can you verify if this will work or should i just go with the cloth to muffle. Thanks for the help!

The idea is to muffle the head somehow, whether it's duct tape, cloth, moongels, or whatever;
so, in that sense it should work. I've seen people use duct tape for muffling the bass drum,
and I saw a guy use it to hold his trigger down on his snare head before.
With that said, try the cloth with a lighter type of tape first, something like packing tape
or scotch tape. It won't be as ugly, and you won't have to worry about the glue of the tape
getting on your head. Once, I used a real heavy tape on a brand new Falam Slam head, and I
tried to pull the tape up to move it, and it peeled the coating of the head right off.
That suuucked!
If the cloth and tape don't work, use the duct tape. No big deal.
Experiment to find what works for you.
BTW, this applies the the BATTER side head. Don't muffle the snare side.
Do you know what I mean?

Yeah. I just saw an old video of Dave Weckl, and he had
black electrical tape on his snare. Anything can work I guess.
