I guess you have to just try 'em out both, if you can and find out wich work for you.
From what I've been told the Axis are great for fast, continious bassdrumparts, but they don't have a lot of power. The DD has yet to really get credit, because is hasn't been tested by so many drummers, just because they're brand new on the market. They are, however seem to be very versatile, but it just yet has to prooved that they are really roadworthy as well.
I haven't played the DD for long periods of time, so I can't tell you anything about them. The axis gave me a bad experience, but maybe I just had some f*cked up ones, since I bought them secondhand. Aside from that, I did find the design of the pedal to be very weak.
A lot of drummers will probably disagree with me on this, because axis is the most populair brand of pedals among extreme metal drummers. Having mentioned this I couldn't get over the fact though, that the axis pedals are kept together by numerous different, iron alanscrews, bolted into 'softer than iron' aluminium. If you want to bolt all the screws really tight, in order to keep your pedal together, while playing, you will f*ck up the aluminium, making your pedal worthless. I found this to be a mayor flaw in the axis design. I found the iron cobra's to be built, much more sturdy and durable.
All the new and advanced pedals are great when it comes to feel, versatility and settings, but the more parts the pedal consists of, the more there is to break.
Maybe you should consider taking up the Tricks Pro V1 or the Dominators in your decision. I've heard A LOT of great things about them. Even some axis users claimed that they are better than the axis. But they are expensive, so you might wanna consider your budget as well...

I recently got the Demon Drive & the science behind them is excellent. makes me wonder how this wasnt thought of before.
I was actually using (OLD) DW pedals & had problems with the cross-bar breaking on me alot of times. Back then i was using only a single bass kick drum. Now i have expanded to double kicks & the Demons give you the option of going from single to double kick. If you check out the Pearl Demon Site there should be a great video giving you alittle look at the pedals.
I havent found my settings yet, but have plenty of options to mess with
KEEP IT BRUTAL \m/

After using Iron Cobras for most of my drum life, I recently switched to the Demon Drives (two singles). Personally, I love the hell out of those pedals. I had tried the Axis longboards, but they didn't seem like they had the power behind each kick to satisfy my taste. The Demon Drives gave me the power I wanted, and they're smooth as silk. Lots of gimmicky options on the DDs too, I'm a sucker for that
As said before, it would be best for you to try out each pedal yourself if you can. Everybody has different tastes. Direct drive is a different world than belt or chain, it took me a couple sessions to get used to the switch.

I've had the same garbage experience with Axis pedals...they're nice, don't get me wrong, the price tag is horrible, and if you're not a finesse player, which I'm not, they tend to just fly apart. the heel - toe factor however is so clean. The demon drives provide the same action and brilliance of the design, and they're fifty times more durable, haven't taken them on the road or anything, but have played them a bunch of times.
I must say though, DW5000's ad 9000's are the best pedals I've played. They're so smooth, and I've had the same issue as the other dude that said he played them with the drive bar breaking, the u-joints aren't the most durable, and the replacement piece through DW is like...80 bucks, it was worth it, I've replaced it twice. They're a workhorse, especially the 5000's. I've taken those out on the road and with some regular attention they'll last you forever. The only thing other than the drive bar that gave me problems was the delta hinge on the right pedal, and if you keep everything straight as an arrow and tight as hell you shouldn't ever have an issue. They just like to be linear.

If you're obsessed with speed and on you're way to reaching kollias's Kafir level the demon drives will most likely take you forever mostly in terms of building
Leg and ankle strength but they are a Damn good pedal for building that strength. Once you move on to trick or axis especially direct drives with ready strength they will skyrocket your speed but you will have too adjust to their feel
