Issue with new pedal. please help! 3 Years, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
I recently purchased a Tama Iron Cobra Jr. double kick. It's quite an upgrade from my last pedal (Pulse...) but it has one issue. The heel of the right pedal sits about an inch or so off the ground, so I'm losing energy with each stroke because half of my force is being used to push the pedal back down to the ground. I've adjusted the position of the clamp on the rim several times, and that's really the only thing I can think to try. I've never come across this before with any other pedal.

If you have any ideas at all, please let me know. If it helps, I'm using a Crash Pad rug and a plastic bass drum rim. It's a standard sized bass drum which is, what, 22"? Also if this is confusing, let me know I'll try to explain better.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

this may sound stupid, but do you have your bass drum legs all the way out from the clamp or halfway down the leg? I have Axis and if my bass drum legs aren't all the way out,to where the side your kicking is more towards the ground,my pedals stick up in the air also,I hope this was of some help to you,if not sorry.

Another question that may sound stupid... If the pedals are sitting alone (not on a drum) on a hard floor, are they bent at all? If not, you can try putting some rubber strip or folded cardboard between the hoop & the pedal to drum clamp. I had this problem with my IC's and it was because there was too much room to tighten the clamp, and would lift the back of the pedal when cranked. ???

Sorry to all you players who love Iron Cobra pedals, but they are like running-in-sand to me. They have construction that makes them look like an emergency jack for a bus, but with an "adorable" little sewing machine spring - which the last time I looked was the engine of the pedal. Even with 23 spring changes (from auto parts shops!) it STILL was a nightmare.

To me, they absolutely feel like shit. I honestly can't think of another pedal that loses anywhere near as much Energy from foot-action to mass-at-impact with the kick head...and no matter how the kick drum is angled - and heel up or heel down.

When there are such great choices out there, I'd sell yours privately (you'll likely get hosed on a trade-in) and go with something that feels about 80% right the second you put your foot down on the thing...whatever that turns out to be. This stuff is obviously highly personal - as to what feels right - but the last thing anybody needs is 1) the constant distraction of "something not feeling right down there", and 2) something that seems to want to fight with you all night. Who needs that shit?
