I've been using a TAMA Spartan Warlord for awhile, and I doubt I'll ever need another snare. I also have a TAMA 13" x 3.5" hand hammered piccolo snare which i used when i played with Aborted Existence - nice tight sound for blast beats. The Spartan Warlord is also great for blast beats, ghost notes, rim shots, and it sounds awesome with the snares off. Very full and focused sound, too bad it was recently discontinued. I still have the stock heads on after probably 4-5 years, and I make sure to tune it up pretty nicely before I record anything.
I played a DW Edge snare a few years ago, i think it was maybe a 5" x 14", and it was absolutely perfect but they go for about $900+ which is why i never bought one.
Fav snare sound? I have to give that to Danny Carey of TOOL for his Jeff Ocheltree snare made of melted down Paiste 2002 cymbals. Not sure of the size tho. Now he's using his signature snare from Sonor which also sounds delicious.
