This is me playing Freezing Moon by Mayhem on drums. August 10, 1993. A day that will live in infamy. On this day in 1316, the Second Battle of Athenry happened. On this day in 1519, Magellan's ships set sail. On this day in 1977, Dave Berkowitz was arrested for the Son of Sam murders. However, on this day in 1993, two events happened that shaped the existence of two beings/things. Firstly, on this day 16 years ago at 10:47 PM, a little scrawny fucker was born in Bristol, Connecticut by the name of Richard William Lowell. He was a little runt, knocking stuff over and breaking things. He grew up to be a drummer. Then, on that very same day 16 years ago, a guitarist for a Norwegian black metal band called Mayhem by the name of Øystein Aarseth (better known as Euronymous) was murdered at the age of 25 by a man of the same band known as Varg Vikernes of the black metal band Burzum.. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison for his acts. The two of them played on an album by Mayhem, Aarseth on guitar, Vikernes on bass, known as De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. It was released on May 24, 1994. It is considered by many, Lowell included, to be the greatest black metal album ever made. And now, on this day in 2009, 16 years after the death of Euronymous, 16 years after I was born as I sit here in incredible pain from the Mayhem Festival, listening to black metal, drinking Coca Cola, I feel like I have found my calling. It was no coincidence that I love heavy metal. I believe that it is my calling and my fate to become a heavy metal musician. And come hell or high water I will achieve that dream. That goal. I know it'll be hard to make a living playing this music, but if a band like Cannibal Corpse or Morbid Angel or Death (Rest In Peace Chuck Schuldiner) can do it, I can.
